This morning in Norfolk, Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel announced an eight-count indictment of Virginia Sen. Lillie Louise Lucas, 82, of Portsmouth. The Justice Department says seven defendants face a racketeering case: marijuana distribution of 100 kilograms or more, money laundering, honest services fraud through bribery, drug-involved premises, firearms in furtherance of trafficking, and wire fraud. Patel put the alleged five-year scheme at an estimated $4.5 million and said Lucas used her chair of the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee to insulate what he called the Lucas Enterprise. That estimate is not the separate $750,000 stake the indictment alleges she bought in 2022, and it is not an $11,800 disaster-loan figure tied to a business partner. An indictment is an allegation. The grand jury returned it. Blanche said federal prosecutors will follow the facts and the evidence.
The Brennan beat is not this morning's press conference. On September 14, lawyer Ken Wainstein disclosed that prosecutors had told John Brennan in writing he is a target of a false-statements investigation, with an October 15 date before a Fort Pierce grand jury. Equal justice is the standard on the page, not a promise you wait on. A sitting finance chair and a former CIA director do not get a softer book.
